We’re deep into marathon season, and I’m seeing a lot of social media posts from people looking longingly at footage of long-distance runners and fantasising about doing something similar. Or from people who already run, and wish they could find a deeper motivation and love for it.

As this suggests, many people find it hard to enjoy running; even those who do it every day. It’s commonplace for runners to describe how they hate running itself but love the feeling afterwards, and so continue to flog themselves out for a run each morning, but think of it as a chore. And many people give running a go a few times, and then vow, never again.

After all, running can make your breathing become laboured and your face tomato-red, with sweat coursing between your breasts. It can put your digestive system in a cocktail shaker, and leave you hopelessly looking for a loo on an exposed cycle path. It can make your knees sore…
